Born and raised in Defiance, Ohio, my
immediate family consists of my wife
Kristen,
ten a half years. She is a
kindergarden teacher at Slocum
Elementary for Defiance City Schools. We
have 3 beautiful daughters; Elyse (9),
Katie (7) Audrey (3) and my son Garyson
(1).
I am the second oldest child and son of Defiance County
residents Bert and Barb Smiddy. I have
three (3) younger siblings; that being
two (2) sisters: Vicki- Mrs. Mark
Stephens (of Defiance) and Angelle- Mrs.
Mitch Reineck (of Ossian, Indiana) and
Brother Jamie Smiddy (of Williamsburg,
Kentucky). My oldest sibling brother
Robbie passed away in infancy.
Education &
Experience
Educational Background: A
1990 graduate of Defiance H.S. I then
furthered my education at Bluffton
College (now known as the University of
Bluffton) and graduated in 1994 with a
B.S. in Sociology and Criminal Justice.
I am a 1996 graduate of (CJTEC) Criminal
Justice Training and Education Center,
Toledo Ohio and received my Ohio Police
Officer’s Training Academy
certification. In 2000, I went back to
school and enrolled in the teaching
program at Bowling Green State
University. I successfully completed Student Teaching at Napoleon Middle
School as well as my student teaching
block core courses for the certification
as an instructor for Integrated Social
Studies (grades 7-12) in 2002.
Experience: I began my
Criminal Justice career in the Fall of
1994 as a college Intern with the United
States Secret Service at their Toledo,
Ohio Field Office. In
1995 I worked as a community service work crew
supervisor for the Defiance County
Juvenile Probation Department. I was then
promoted to Juvenile Probation officer
where I remained until 1996 when hired
by the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office. I worked
as a Deputy Sheriff from 1996-2000 and then
again from 2002 until 2007. I coached
football at the Defiance H.S. for
seasons 2000 and 2001. I have also been
a substitute teacher for Defiance
City Schools as well as at
several adjacent county and city schools
at various grade levels and subjects. I
also just recently received my
certification as a Special Subject
Instructor for the Ohio Police Officer
Training Academy through the State of
Ohio Attorney Generals Office.
I am currently employed as a part-time
Patrolman for the Antwerp Police
Department and am gearing up for an exciting run as
a candidate for Sheriff of Defiance
County.
